ABOUT THE METALS WE SUPPLY:
Hafnium
A transition metal, much used in combination with niobium, titanium or tungsten. Very ductile and corrosion-resistant. Used in the production of control rods for nuclear reactors.
Niobium
A transition metal and effective micro alloying element for steel. Used in superalloys and superconducting magnets. Found in many medical devices, such as pacemakers, being physiologically inert and therefore hypoallergenic.
Tantalum
A transition metal and highly corrosion-resistant. Ductile. Used as a metal powder in the production of electronic components, capacitors and some high power resistors. May produce alloys that have high melting points, are strong and ductile. Used to produce superalloys for jet engine components, chemical process equipment, missile parts and nuclear reactors. Resistant to attack by body fluids. Not an irritant.
Titanium
A transition metal with a low density. Strong and corrosion-resistant. When alloyed with iron, aluminium, vanadium, molybdenum and other elements it produces strong lightweight alloys for aerospace, industrial processes, automotive industries. Due to its high corrosion resistance to sea water, it is used to make propeller shafts. Its hardness is equivalent to that of sapphire and is often used to coat cutting tools.
Vanadium
A transition metal. Mainly used as an alloy known as ferrovanadium as an additive to improve steel. Vanadium steel is used for applications in bicycle frames, crankshafts, gears and axles. Also used in HSS (high speed tool steels) steel.
Rhenium
A transition metal. The 3rd highest melting point and highest boiling point of any element. Used in nickel-based superalloys for use in jet engine parts. Also for industrial gas turbine engines in other superalloys. Improves the properties of tungsten. Tungsten-rhenium alloys are more ductile at low temperatures, so easy to machine. May be applied as X-ray sources.
